Saying Goodbye to Summer 2023

Saying Goodbye to Summer 2023

I can’t believe I am saying that already! I feel like this summer just flew by! So many things happened and I think I did a poor job keeping the blog updated. I need to find a better system and process for everything that is for sure. I really wanted to focus on enjoying the current seaon before jumping into the next. Before I would rush into the next season by August. But the garden is still producing then and serves as a great reminder that Summer isn’t over until the end of September. But let’s see if I can sum up and recap summer 2023 in 10 pictures.

Summer is for Strawberries

Summer 2023 (and spring) was my first year picking strawberries and making strawberry jam! Total, I picked 16 pounds of strawberries at a local strawberry patch and canned 29 jars of jam. Strawberry and strawberry rhubarb jam! No, not all of of this was just for me lol. My dad wanted to pick and can some for him and my mom. It worked out better, that I picked and then he came over and helped can. I was teaching him because it had been forever since they had canned anything and I am not sure that they ever made and canned jam before! And let me tell ya, this jam is AMAZING! And just getting to go pick strawberries was so fun. Read more about the canning process here. I also couldn’t pick fresh strawberries not make fresh strawberry shortcake. You can check out the reel for that here.

Making Time for New Hobbies

I have been waiting six long years for my own kayak! And I made it happen this summer! I am one who doesn’t like to spend any money on myself. Instead, I like to save my money. I always joke I am like a money gremlin, once I have the money I don’t want to let it go besides to my bills. But I sold my old car I had since high school. My dad told me he wanted me to sell it or do what I wanted to it and just use the money for what I wanted. So, I decided I would have a little fun and invest in a kayak. I got an amazing deal and Dunham’s. I went out a handful of times over the summer and I also glad I have my own now! Already made plans with friends next summer to go on a kayaking trip!

Summer is for Making Dreams into Reality

This summer was my first year growing a cut flower garden. I like to call it my mini micro flower farm. I built a roadside stand and everything! There is still a lot I have to learn and am looking and researching for better ways for the next year. But this is something I have wanted to do since the first year growing my own garden. I am hoping I can grow at the farmers market next year. This year I really just used 89 cent boxes of seeds from Menards. I needed to just test the waters out more than anything. Next year, I am hoping to introduce better way with bulbs and high quality seeds for bigger flowers. I felt like this year I had smaller flowers that were filler flowers. But, I am still so happy I started this. I can’t wait for next year!

Roost Eleven Eighteen Turned Two

These last two years seem to have just flown by. From the bottom of my heart, if you are here and reading this, THANK YOU! I never could have imagined how much my little blog would end up filling my cup up. For the longest time, I felt like I needed to find my purpose and I truly believe Roost Eleven Eighteen is exactly that. My hope is that I am making as much of a difference to at least once person like this did for me. Can’t wait to see what we learn together this next year. Though Roost Eleven Eighteen, I have met and made so many friends, and I am so grateful for those friendships. I have now had two articles in magazines, and two more are in progress! Roost Eleven Eighteen has given me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and to lead me down a path I only ever dreamed of before.

Summer is for Canning Pickles

This year I canned bread and butter and dill pickles from scratch. Last year I just did the Mrs. Wages dill pickle packets. But I wanted to try follow the recipes from my Ball canning guide. And they did not disappoint! My roadside stand actually led me to be able to even have cucumbers. Once again, little critters got into my garden and decided to eat my squash plants. And while I had a few other successful plants cucumbers were not one of them. My neighbor, Michelle, asked if I wanted her cucumbers to sell or use myself. She was going out of town and didn’t want them to go to waste. And now I have a great neighbor relationship I am so happy about.

Sunflower Growing

I love sunflowers. And my goal when I first started growing my own garden was to have sunflowers. 2022 I don’t think I had any. But this year I had a lot. And one of my biggest accomplishments this summer was growing not one but two sunflowers about a foot taller than Dustin. So close to 7 foot sunflowers! How cool is that?! Majority of the ones early on in the summer were about half this size. I did have some taller ones but the sunflower head were little babies. What a great view and it is so amazing when i am reminded that this one sunflower head that will produce 100s of seeds all came from one seed! Let’s not forget about all the bees that visited the garden his summer too! I told myself, even if I didn’t sell a single bouquet, I was extremely happy I was able to help the pollinators.

Summer is Harvest Season

This garden season was definitely different than the last two years. I was was proud of myself I got a head start. It was so fun having my dad come over and help my till up the garden in the spring. While I did have success with some veggies, I had to try a few times for others. The tomatoes I started from seed didn’t make it, so I had to buy tomato plants. All my squash related plants had to be replanted 3 times. I didn’t grow any peppers. I was really all peppered out from 2022. My zucchini made it through without any squash bugs. But since I had to replant them numerous times, I didn’t harvest any zucchini until August! You can check out the harvest reel here.

Continuing my Healthy Lifestyle

Over the summer, I continued on my journey for a healthier lifestyle. I focused on creating more healthier meals that included all my favorite veggies. And I continued to make easy swaps that are still enjoyable to me. I focused on taking walks, and getting more sleep. While also working on getting up earlier to get more out of the day. I also got officially diagnosed with PCOS and I have been working out a new plan with a homeopathic doctor. I am hoping we are able to see what is going on with my hormones and to hopefully come up with ways to see results that will better my life.

Another new Hobby

About the same time I got my kayak, Dustin started to golf and became obsessed. I would go along on the cart but would never golf. But then, I decided to try it out and I actually think its so fun! Will we ever make it to the PGA tour? HELL NO! But I enjoy golfing, even if I am average or below average at it! It was even fun golfing with my sister and her boyfriend. Usually it’s us going with Dustin’s friends and family. I just bought myself a cheap old set of clubs off of Dustin’s step dad. And if you have seen the picture of the 8 iron that I broke on my first swing using it, well then that sums it all up pretty nicely haha.

Dog Days of Summer

I needed to include a picture of Kapper. Duh, he’s the real start of the show! Kapper lived a pretty great summer, taking walks before it got too hot for his paws, eating puppy ice cream, celebrated his 3rd birthday, and gave kisses to whoever came over to visit him. He also enjoyed fresh sugar snap peas out of the garden with me and fresh carrots!

August I started my 2nd year at my current university and program. I have been enjoying my classes so far and just trying to adjust and to get back in the swing of everything.

I hope you had a great summer too! Thanks for being here! Looking forward to Fall and ready for some fall content!
