Follow along as I show you how I turned a Thrifted Picture Frame into an Antique Mirror!
I am just going to say it. I am cheap! And I get it honestly from my mom. Clearance racks? I am there. Thrifting? Absolutely. Paying more than $20 for a shirt? It’s a no for me dog. And there is nothing wrong with paying more than that. But I just don’t. I think I prove this with my idea of taking a Thrifted Picture Frame into an Antique Mirror!
For inspiration, I love to look on Pinterest I wanted to incorporate into my home. I loved seeing a mirror be a staple piece on the wall. But have you seen the price for bigger mirrors? And with a cute frame? Pretty darn expensive to me for it to just hang on the wall.
So, to Goodwill, I went. I actually found a lot of cute items. It was my first time at Goodwill in a while. I found a super cute lamp, a lantern, and a galvanized little tin. Furthermore, I found exactly what I was looking for in this project! I loved the size and the frame.
I picked this baby up for $10!! It measures 32 inches long and just as wide. A great win for me!!! This was one of those projects where my husband thought I was crazy. Actually, he probably thinks that about 90% of my projects and DIY ideas. However, for the most part, they turn out pretty good.
Random Product Shortages, we have all experienced it this last year and a half!
The only other object I needed for this was some mirror spray paint. Sounds pretty simple right? I thought so too, but with the shortages on basically everything in 2020-2021 turned out differently. The only big box home improvement store in my little town is Menards. We love Menards, I was waiting for the Rustoleum mirror spray paint to be restocked but it was taking forever. I looked around at Walmart and they didn’t have anything like what I was looking for either. However, we went to Lowe’s a few towns over for something very unrelated, probably for Dustin to buy some tools (if you know you know).
Now the Fun Begins!
At Lowe’s, I found the Krylon Mirror Spray Paint. I bought two cans just in case, but I don’t even think I used half of one can. This was an easy project. To prep the frame, I just cleaned the glass with Windex and wiped down the frame. Next, I took the picture out of the frame, don’t need that anymore! I then just took the glass out of the frame and brought it outside to paint.
With this spray paint, the side that you paint will be the back side, the dull side. So I picked the side I wanted to be the back of and went to work. A good tip that I learned, is that you really don’t want to do short, small sprays. You definitely want to just spray all the way across and then stop and go below what you just sprayed. If you don’t make it all the way across, it can leave lines. The mirror spray paint dries extremely fast as well. I did a few coats and It was good to go.
The Finished Antique Mirror!
Here is the finished mirror! My sister and I were inspired by Mr. Kate and did some watercolor paintings and I paired it with some pictures I took. I didn’t touch the frame I liked the colors and everything. You can probably tell it looks more of an antique mirror than a brand new mirror. But I really like it this way! such an easy and wallet-friendly way of making a staple piece for one of your walls! Between the frame and paint, I only spent $20 on this project!
